Abstract
This article explores a post‐modern approach to religious experience in the South Pacific Islands by interpreting images of religion in the fiction of Albert Wendt, one of the region's most prolific writers. Interpreting religious symbols, within a broad phenomenological perspective, it is argued that Wendt's novel, Pouliuli, viewed as a post‐colonial expression, evokes powerful contemporary images of transformation that are also continuous with traditional cultural forms.
