Abstract
Ojkanje is a trademark of the musical folk culture (singing) of Mountainous Croatia, that is, the Dalmatian hinterland and the Dinaric region. It has been described ethnomusicologically, but not acoustically. The aim of the current explorative study was to analyse the long-term average spectrum (LTAS) of the ojkanje voice and to examine if it relies on a singer's formant. Twelve male professional Croatian folk singers and dancers voluntarily took part in the study. The acoustic analysis was performed with the PRAAT computer program. In addition, a self-perceptual evaluation of ojkanje was carried out. The LTAS analysis showed a great intensity (loudness) as the major characteristic, and this finding has been confirmed as a major quality in the self-perceptual evaluation. There was no evidence of a singer's formant. However, the LTAS curves showed a pronounced peak at 3.2-3.5 kHz suggesting a speaker's formant. This feature deserves another label because it was found in a singing voice. For the reason that it is predominantly the result of very loud singing approaching shouting, which is typical for ojkanje-singing, a different and more appropriate label is suggested - shouter's ring. Apart from its great loudness, other perceptual features of ojkanje-singing were established: laryngeal tension, masculinity, and openness of voice. The results of both the current study and other independent studies in the arena of the acoustics of folk singing contribute to voice science and to ethnomusicology. Practical applications can be found within the singing pedagogy curriculum, which in recent times has not been limited to opera singing alone.
