Abstract

The Second World War had a great impact on the French press in general, and the musical press in particular. 57 music periodicals were being published in France in 1939, but their number had shrunk to no more than 19 in 1941. This change of fortunes affected even well-known titles such as Le Ménestrel, which ceased publication for good in 1940 after more than a century's existence. In other cases, such as that of the Revue musicale, or the weekly Guide du concert, a break in publication was only temporary in nature. Once the Germans were in control of Paris, periodical publishers were required to request authorisation to publish from the Press section of the Propaganda Department. Between June 1940 and August 1944 only 24 music periodicals were published, the majority of them not destined for general circulation. Two titles that did cater for a more general readership were La Vie angevine, based in Angers, and L'Information musicale. The latter took the place of La Revue musicale during the war years: its content, however, was closer to that of Le Guide du concert, as it appeared weekly and included details of concerts taking place in Paris. L'information musicale gave priority to the work of French composers, particularly young composers, and especially those who had died in battle or were prisoners in Germany. A "numéro special" was devoted to Honegger, one of the most played composers in France during the Occupation. While it is difficult to judge the extent to which the journal was a tool of German propaganda, it should be noted that it reported favourably on concerts organised by the Institut allemand and devoted a long article to the German composer Werner Egk when he came to Paris to conduct his opera Peer Gynt. Furthermore, Robert Bernard, editor of L'Information musicale, was one of a group of French musicians who accepted an invitation in 1941 to travel to Vienna for the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Mozart's death. Once the war was over, Ber
