Abstract
On 1 August 1752, Pergolesi's Italian intermezzo La Serva padrona made its debut at the Paris Opera, a stage reserved for the glories of French music. This event sparked a fiery controversy known as the querelle des bouffons, fought out in some sixty pamphlets published between 1752 and 1754. An unparalleled opportunity to examine the full political and cultural significance of a musical controversy in eighteenth-century Paris, the querelle des bouffons transgressed the boundary between aesthetic and political, broke down barriers concerning the use of public space, and became a symbol of the emerging public sphere.
